The Book

Published by Chester Civic Trust in late December 2001, the book '2000 Years of Building - Chester's Architectural Legacy' is a compilation of over 130 structures in the City of Chester. These structures include walls, bridges, towers and canals, in addition to shops, churches etc. It is a representative sample of the surviving evidence of almost 2000 years of occupation and development in the city.

A paperback publication of more than 200 pages, it is well illustrated with photographs, drawings and maps. It includes a timeline that sets each structure in its

historic context, in nine chapters, covering the periods from the Roman occupation through to the present day.

It is edited by Stephen Langtree, former Chairman and current Vice President of the Chester Civic Trust, together with Dr Alan Comyns: Chairman of the Chester Archaeological Society. Each period is introduced by expert and specialist local authors with a deep knowledge of the architectural, military and social history of the city.

The contributors are all passionate about Chester, and convey this in the book. It will be of great interest to any reader who cares to find out more about the development of this unique city.

This comprehensive index to buildings and architects makes this a handy reference work in addition to a fascinating read. It will be the standard work on Chester City buildings for many years to come.
